We shall now discuss in turn the Maglite 2D Cell, the LED 4D Cell, the Mini Maglite and Maglite Upgrades and accessories.

The Maglite 2D Cell torch is in fact the smallest of Maglite's range of D Cells, which is of course a benefit as it does not get caught in a belt loop as it is less cumbersome than a larger torch. Often police forces limit their staff to carrying 2D Cells. Each D Cell contains 2 intense krypton lamps for extensive brilliance and long range. These torches are strongly manufactured and produce an extremely high intensity beam.

Maglite's LED 4D Cell is their most advanced torch and the latest addition to their range. This is a top selling torch and is classic. Because this is one of Maglite's largest torches, it is ideal for auxiliary tasks such as putting through windows when necessary. Also the 4D is ideal for self-defence situations and almost all police personnel have knowledge of someone who has used a Maglite in this way. The LED version produces a more powerful beam than the standard 4D, while at the same time the battery life is extended, meaning that running costs are much lower.

The Mini Maglite is the perfect size for attaching to a belt or fitting into a pouch. This torch is about the same dimensions as a Surefire 6P, but available for a much lower cost. These little Maglites are dependable, reliable and have a solid finish.

Whilst discussing Maglites, it is also worth talking about Maglite LED Upgrades, which are a good investment. An official D Cell LED upgrade will adapt your torch by offering an amazingly bright beam that you need to see to believe. Battery life is improved by 10 fold and so this upgrade will pay for itself in no time at all. Also, you are still protected by your warranty as this is an official upgrade, unlike other upgrades available on the market.

There are many other upgrades and accessories that can be purchased for Maglites, including headbands, switches that fit onto the tail of the torch to turn it on and off with a push button, nylon and leather holsters, gun mounts, belt loops, coloured wand attachments as well as a fibre optic adapter and various clamps.

Mag has two models in the Mini line upgraded to LED and sold as complete new LED flashlights. They also rolled out upgrade kits for some of the models in the C and D series.

But these are not the only way to upgrade your trusted Mag lite flashlight to LED.

Third party conversion kitsThird party kits are also available and getting better too. With these upgrade kits you can pretty much upgrade any Mag model. However, not all of those kits are created equal.

When you find a label that says your kit will void the original Mag warranty, you might want to shop a bit more. Because there are third party kits out there officially claiming - and obviously delivering the benefits of - not to void the original warranty. And you never know when you end up calling up on that assurance over the long life of your trusted and durable Mag lite.

LED bulb upgrades and kits

Moreover, there are LED bulb kits available to upgrade your Mag lite to LED just by replacing the old bulb. Both single and multiple bulb kits (ususally with 3 LED units) are available. However, as an upgrade, your preference should generally be given to single LED bulbs. Here's why.

LEDs do not have one single resistance so they operate at various voltages passing various currents. If there is more than one LED in a kit they will have slightly different performance characteristics. But those slight differences could amount to drastically different operating voltages and currents. This way they could effectively shorten each other's bright life phase. And if that happens they will tend to turn into bluish and quite possibly lose a substantial part of their brightness.

Finally Maglite are in the process of creating MAG-LED Technology (1) with the intention of incorporating an LED into a Maglite torch, but what about your old Maglite torches?
MiniMaglite

Fortunately it is a simple modification to replace the standard incandescent bulb for an ultra-bright white LED. The torch will not be quite as bright as it was before, but the increased reliability is well worth that loss. The best torch to modify is a standard 2 AA battery MiniMaglite®. Lighting up an ultra-bright white LED with the 3 volts from 2 AA batteries will give you a very dull torch with batteries that will last for weeks. However, for maximum brightness it is necessary to replace the 2 AA batteries with 3 N sized batteries (best priced at UKbattery.co.uk (2) in the UK.)

3 N cells in series provides 4.5 volts, but white LEDs require 3.6 volts, therefore a 15 Ohm resistor is required to limit the current to 30mA. Using a lower rated resistor is possible, but the current will increase leading to an emormous shortening of the lifetime of the LED (down to tens or hundreds of hours from hundreds of thoudands of hours at rated current).

As 3 N cells are shorter in length than 2 AA cells, it is necessary to create a spacer. Take a piece of wooden dowling the same or similar diameter to an AA battery. Then drill a 3mm hole through the middle from end to end. Get two wide headed nails, nip off all but 5mm of the length of each nail (or use a drawing pin if you prefer). Wind one of the legs of the resistor around the first nail. Put the nail and resistor into the hole you have drilled in the dowling rod and then epoxy or super glue the nail in place. When that is dry you can wind the other leg of the resistor around the second nipped nail and glue that nail in place too.

If you have 1.2V rechargeable NiCad or NiMH N-sized cells, then three of those in series with a solid metal (or wood wrapped in aluminium foil) spacer will give you the 3.6V required. At full charge the current through the LED will be over the rated value, but as the batteries use up some charge the current will fall back down to <30mA as required for long LED lifetime.

The LED itself just needs to have its legs trimmed to around 5mm and pushed in where the bulb previously lived. Then increase the size of the hole in the reflector so that the LED will fit through, and that's it. Your homemade LED maglite is ready for action.

Rechargeable Flashlight System (MagCharger)

All of these models have a powerful beam and are known to be used by many Police Departments and Security personnel. The Maglite torch is very well made with an alloy alluminum shell that is anodised to help reduce corrosion. The Maglite is also water resistent with high quality rubber seals and has an adjustible beam, that adjusts from a spot light to a flood light with a twist of the base. With all of these models there are accessories available along with replacement bulbs and carrying cases.

The 2D Cell torch is the smallest of the D Cell lights. It is easier to carry than the other D Cells. Some of the Police Departments reccomend their officers to carry nothing larger than a 2D because it is less bulky and less likely to get caught in other equipment. The LED lights that are available through Maglite are quality constructed also. They provide a bright light when you need it the most. The 4D Led is the newest of the LED line, and can also be used in a self defense situatation if needed. This is because of the bulky size of the 4D.

What sets the mini mag off from the other mag lites is its size (easy to hold with teeth while working under car, sink, etc) and one little known feature - "candle" mode. You adjust the beam focus by rotating the mini mag's head, but if you continue turning the head pops off; you are left with the handle and the exposed bulb, which is now throwing light in all directions - it is a "candle". Flip the head over, place it on the ground/table - it is now a "candle holder". Stick the candle into the candle holder. Instant candle for camping. (These directions are actually on the mini mag's packaging, but it wasn't until I had bought my third mini mag (one for car, kitchen, daypack) that I noticed. This is actually a great trick to show other mini mag owners... they also threw their packaging away without looking it)

However to minimize this marvel of engineering to a source of portable light, is to commit an injustice. Like many items that have become the very definition of their product niche, their original task, becomes one use amongst many.

Joggers/Runners/Walkers: We have all seen the aforementioned progressing down the street carrying a stick to ward off any overly enthusiastic, allegedly domesticated, pets. Now other than throwing said stick in the hopes the quadruped in question will chase it, I don't think it will deter a Doberman, Ratweiler, or Pit bull. With the likelihood of having one swipe at self-defense, on the off chance you connect, unlike a stick, this will get their attention. If two are carried, you can save the cost of those bags of buckshot that serve as weights when velcroed around the wrist.

One reviewer, (a friend), mentioned how "cute" the tiniest of these are. No argument here. However, in the event of an assailant, anything larger than a Gerbil, and you are out of luck. But unlike those pouches people have been wearing around their waist, which if I may digress, are the ugliest blasted appendages, get your self a snazzy o-ring. You will be on the cutting edge of fashion well before the Chanel version appears in "Cosmo". And as far as utility, the next time an officer of the law approaches your car, notice what he or she carries, and how he or she carries it. Oh yeah, that's why they have them out during broad daylight!

For the Gardeners out there, no more running back for the hammer when a tomato stake needs attention. For the Winter Sportsman or woman, this will come in handy when heading out to your ice fishing shack and you find a layer of ice over your fishing hole. One swing and your done, just keep a firm grip, as they don't exactly give these away.

Doorstop, ice-pick replacement, and signal safety light, the uses are limited only by your ingenuity. If these were any more effective, there would be a 3-day waiting period to buy one.
